Implementation Delivery of PE

Walderslade Primary School uses the National Curriculum in England 2014 framework for the basis of the PE school curriculum. PE is taught in 6 half termly blocks mapped out in the PE passport.

In the Reception classes (EYFS), opportunities are provided for children to be active and to develop their co-ordination, control and movement through handling activities which involve the use of a range of equipment and involve different spatial experiences. Structured lessons and opportunities for outdoor physical activity amount to at least 2 hours each week which includes continuous provision in EYFS.

Pupils in both KS1 and KS2 engage in 2 hours of high quality PE during the week. In KS1 the curriculum builds on the fundamental movement skills of agility, balance and co-ordination taught in EYFS. Curriculum content includes a balance of Movement skills, Dance, Gymnastics, Target games, Athletics and Invasion games.

At KS2 pupils continue to apply and further develop a range of skills through the following units of work:

  • Gymnastics
  • Athletics
  • OAA
  • Invasion Games: Tag Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Football, Hockey
  • Striking and Fielding games: Cricket, Rounders

  • Perform dances using a range of movement
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.

  • PE Passport
  • CPD training received from qualified coaches
  • PE specialist teacher/ Sports coaches (Chance to Shine etc.)

Timetabling

At Walderslade, all children receive at least two hours of PE each week. To ensure 2 hours of PE is taught, all classes from Reception to Year 6 are timetabled for at least one hour in the hall and one hour outside on either the playground or bottom field. In the event of wet weather the classes which are timetabled for outdoor PE can still engage in a number of classroom activities such as speed stacking.

Lesson Observations

To develop high standards a monitoring programme has been put in place whereby teachers are observed by the subject leader on a regular basis. This includes feedback on strengths and areas for improvement.

Sports Premium

Sports Premium money is used to improve the quality of teaching through increased CPD opportunities, the use of fully qualified coaches to deliver curriculum lessons and the purchase of better resources. It is also used to enhance sports and physical activity at lunchtimes by providing additional playtime equipment. The money is also used to allow time for the subject leader to develop PE and enable children to attend a high number of inter- school competitions.
