Geography
Intent
At Walderslade Primary School, through the teaching of geography, we aim to stimulate pupil’s interest and wonder in the world around them. The curriculum is designed to allow progression of pupil’s knowledge and skills.
The National Curriculum for Geography aims to ensure that all pupils:
Develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine including their defining physical and human characteristics
- Understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world
- Are competent in the geographical skills needed to collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork
- Interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs
- Communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at
Implementation
Our school uses the National Curriculum framework as the basis for its curriculum planning and progression steps in geography. Geography is planned and taught within our termly expedition areas and knowledge organisers are provided for pupils which outline the main facts, vocabulary and skills to be covered in that area. Medium planning ensures that there is sufficient depth and coverage of knowledge and progression across year groups is ensured through the use of progression maps which detail the key learning to be carried out in each year group. Lessons are planned and delivered to enable all children in the class to access and make appropriate progress in geography. Termly review and mapping of expedition books ensures coverage across geography over the year. Each year group embarks on a Road trip; with these moving from the local area to world wide 'trips'. Pupils use regular check points throughout the expedition to ensure that 'sticky knoweldge' is regularly reviewed and retained, informing adaptation of the curriculum as needed.
Impact
The impact of our geography is monitored in various ways, through Prior Expedition Reviews (Entry) and Expedition Reviews (Exit), lesson observations, pupil voice and book looks. This should ensure that pupils leave our school with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
